Client Requirements

Golden Star, a TSX listed gold miner operating the Wassa and Bogoso-Prestia Gold Mines in Ghana, was interested in optimising the operations to improve throughput and recovery, reduce operating and all-in-sustaining costs, assess the metallurgical accounting processes, and independently audit the site laboratories.

Project Solutions and Approach

MineScope was engaged to undertake an Operational Review, assess Metallurgical Accounting practice, and complete a Laboratory audit at both Wassa and Bogoso-Prestia mines. This process was undertaken in two stages; the first stage being the collection and review of plant operating data and reports and a forensic analysis of the site laboratories and systems, and the second stage, a follow-up site visit to independently validate the data provided, gather additional data, and assess the day-to-day operating practices of both sites.

MineScope’s focus was to provide a high-level review of Asset Integrity & Infrastructure, plus a detailed assessment of Metallurgy, Metallurgical Accounting, Process Plant, and Tailings and Water Management, with a forensic audit of the site Laboratory practices and systems. At the completion of the site visit, the preliminary conclusions and recommendations were presented to the site management team.

Outcomes and Achievements

MineScope prepared three separate reports summarizing the detailed Operational Review, the Metallurgical Accounting Assessment, and the Laboratory Audit. The reports outlined key site observations and provided 95 recommended actions. These actions were split into Immediate, Short-Term and Long-Term actions ranging from improvements in recovery and long-term plant availability, to risk reduction actions, to enhancements in operating and maintenance practices, to corrective actions for metallurgical accounting and laboratory practices.

Based on the quality of the review, assessment and audit and the value of the identified savings and actions, MineScope was engaged to provide Group Metallurgical services to assist the site teams to prioritise and implement the recommended actions and deliver on key outcomes.
