The Bulyanhulu Gold Mine in Tanzania was a mature mining operation which historically had underperformed against design and resource expectations.
Project Solutions and Approach
MineScope was retained to develop and implement an Optimisation Study considering all elements of the operation from drill-hole datasets through mine design and process operations. MineScope assembled and led an integrated team utilising seconded client staff as well as in-house MineScope consultants to carry out the comprehensive update to the LoM plan for the operation. Mid-way through the study, the operation was shut down due to the Tanzanian Government embargo on the shipment of concentrates. As such the Optimisation work (including a new MRE, Mine design, Cost estimates, Process operational strategies and workforce optimisation) was then updated to consider implementing the changes as part of an Operational Restart once the embargo was lifted.
Outcomes and Achievements
Whilst this asset has since gone through a Change-of-Control, the outcomes of the Operational Restart Study was used as the basis for the successful Operational Restart under the new owners (Barrick Gold Corporation).
